After capturing Kauai’s magic for over eleven years, photographer Aaron Feinberg wanted to produce his first book, Kauai – A New Light. This long awaited compilation traverses the portfolio from classic scenes to intimate landscapes to surreal abstractions. I worked closely with Aaron to get a feel for his vision of the book.
We decided to do two regular edition covers. A green version and an orange version. The contrast worked well. The regular edition would also come with a slipcase. A custom pattern was commissioned and drawn to represent the indigenous art, culture and flora and fauna of the island. This pattern covers the slipcase in a spot varnish. The Limited Edition version comes signed and numbered and enclosed in a clamshell box.
Kauai – A New Light was well received and the feedback has been positive. The books can be purchased here.
This called a “flatplan” and is used by designers to get a overview and feel for the flow of a book design .
To see how all the images and text work together.
To get a feel for the colour weight and form of the pages and spreads.
An early mentor of mine showed me this technique and I’ve used it ever since.
